At the time of her casting announcement, few details regarding Ashton’s role in The Marvels were provided aside from the fact that she was playing a nemesis to Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about the villain Ashton could be playing in The Marvels, and the latest rumor suggests the antagonist will be a character unfamiliar to most.

According to Murphy’s Multiverse, Ashton’s Captain Marvel 2 villain will be loosely based on the Kree comic character named Ael-Dan. In the comics, General Ael-Dan devises a scheme with General Dar-Benn and other Kree soldiers to assassinate the Emperor and place the blame on the Skrulls. Following their successful attempt to kill and dethrone the Emperor, Ael-Dan and Dar-Benn jointly rule the Kree Empire in his place until they themselves are murdered by Deathbird and their minds are absorbed by the Supreme Intelligence. Since Ashton will be playing a gender-swapped take on Ael-Dan, the outlet notes that villain fans will see in The Marvels is essentially an original character. “I’ve heard the character described as both the Kree Emperor and a Kree general. In the comics, both are true and I can’t confirm if Ashton’s character will be one or the other or both in the film,” the outlet’s article reads.
As the outlet notes, the inclusion of Ashton’s villain means Carol Danvers will find herself coming into conflict with a new Kree government roughly 30 years after their first run-in during Captain Marvel. Reportedly, Marvel Studios has wanted to work with Ashton for a while, so while the outlet can’t confirm if her character will survive the events of The Marvels, she will have a far greater impact than her loose comic book counterpart. It is worth noting that the writer of the article regarding Ashton’s character opens by acknowledging that information in their “What I Heard This Week” pieces “should be treated as a rumor.”
Fans will have to find out if this rumor turns out to be true, but it is highly likely that whoever they may be, the villain of The Marvels will be a powerful and resourceful foe. After all, why else would the immeasurably powerful Captain Marvel need an assist from Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel?
Of course, another mystery surrounding The Marvels concerns the status of the relationship between Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau. Although the two were close when Rambeau was a child, there were some hints in WandaVision that the two grew apart in the years between Captain Marvel and The Marvels.
The Marvels is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 17, 2023.
