The Witch Queen is the fourth major expansion for Destiny 2 and will pit guardians against the titular Hive god of deception and her Light-imbued Hive guardians of the Lucent Brood. Players will need to investigate Savathun’s Throne World to learn how she gained the Light for herself, separate fact from fiction when it comes to her history, and ultimately take back the Light. Players will go into battle with a suite of refreshed abilities and new weapons, some which can be crafted, to thin the ranks of the Lucent Brood and reach Savathun.

As with previous expansions, Destiny 2 is set for extended downtime for Bungie to perform maintenance on the game in preparation for The Witch Queen and Season of the Risen going live. Bungie Help provided a base timeline on Twitter, saying it will begin to “undergo maintenance for Update 4.0.0.1,” at 6PM PST/9PM EST. Remaining players will then be removed from the game at 6:45PM PST/9:45PM EST and won’t be able to log back in until 9AM PST/12PM EST on Tuesday, February 22.
Bungie also provided a more detailed timeline on its official help page for players who want to be ready when the expansion goes live. It says players can begin pre-loading update 4.0.0.1 at 7PM PST/10PM EST, though Bungie adds PS4 players will need to download all required content before the patch. Additionally, log-ins to Bungie.net and select Destiny 2 apps will be re-enabled after the patch goes live on February 22, though some Destiny 2 gear management apps will still be down.
Bungie Help also cautions if players log back in when The Witch Queen goes live at 9AM PST/12PM EST, they may be placed in a queue until maintenance ends at 10AM PST/1PM EST.
As mentioned above, downtime of this length ahead of a major expansion’s release is nothing new for the Destiny community. It serves as the proverbial “calm before the storm” when new, returning, and hardcore players descend on Destiny 2 anxious to dive into the new content awaiting them. That said, it remains to be seen if the game will be able to hold up when the expansion goes live and how quick Bungie is to respond to any potential problems.
Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
