Up until now, Bungie has kept quiet on the name for Season 7. When the Annual Pass was first revealed, it was simply referred to as “Season of the [Blank].”
The Season of the Shadow will feature the Penumbra content drop, the third and final bit of DLC included with the Destiny 2: Forsaken Annual Pass. The definition of a penumbra being the shadow cast by an astral body, for example during an eclipse. The significance of the final announced DLC being Penumbra and its Season being the Season of the Shadow should be immediately apparent.
Destiny 2’s Season titles are quite clearly saying more than would otherwise be apparent. The Season of the Outlaw is a clear reference to Cayde-6, considering his role in Forsaken. But contextually it’s just as fitting of a description for the player character who has gone outside the confines of the Last City and the expectations of a Guardian to pursue vengeance.
The next two Season titles likely have more to them as well, hints at story as-yet unrevealed. The soon-to-start Season of the Forge points towards the new “Lost Forge” activity, or perhaps just to a nod to the Black Armory and discovering or making lots of new weapons. Season 6 is The Season of the Drifter, in reference to the Gambit mode’s host, AKA The Drifter. It’s well-known that there’s more to The Drifter than his game show host persona implies, and players should discover more about him in Season 6.
The Season of the Shadow’s title, however, is unignorable. Whether or not Penumbra proves to be the final major content release for Destiny 2 or not, Destiny 3 is a looming reality. As hinted at in the end of Destiny 2’s base campaign, something hiding in the darkness heard the reawakening of the Traveler and approaches. The Season of the Shadow’s title could be a direct warning in a way even Penumbra doesn’t make wholly clear.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
