In the Season of the Splicer, Guardians are forced to contend with the Vex once more. The Vex have managed to plunge the Last City into an endless night, threatening the safety of humanity. Ikora reveals that a past ally, Mithrax, is one of the last remaining Sacred Splicers and possesses the knowledge to properly combat the Vex. In addition to his help, Guardians will be working with the Vanguard to harness Splicer tech in their attempts to repel the Vex incursion.

Along with a new 6-player matchmaking activity, players will dive in weekly to tackle the pinnacle story mission Expunge. Here, Guardians are tasked with uncovering new vulnerabilities within the Vex Network. Entering the network requires a Splicer Gauntlet - likely the new seasonal artifact - and the use of a Splicer Key. Together, the items are utilized to infiltrate and shut down the Vex Network.

The trailer that Bungie released for Season of the Splicer also brings back an archaic Vex Network familiar with dedicated Guardians in Destiny 2. The time lost Vault of Glass raid finally makes its return, giving players old and new the opportunity to face off against Atheon once more. Even better, the storied raid isn’t locked behind the Season Pass, as Bungie is making the activity free for everyone when it releases on May 22.

Season of the Splicer also marks the introduction of Armor Synthesis. Ada-1 returns with the Loom, granting players the opportunity to create Synthweave, in turn granting favored armor pieces the power to become a Universal Ornament. Essentially, Guardians are being given the tools to make specific armor piece styles available for all armor, although the transmog system hasn’t had a warm reception from fans, who see it as another way to increase the in-game grind.

All of this kicks off officially on May 11 and lasts until August 24. Bungie also unveiled its Season of the Splicer schedule detailing the individual events and when specific ones would go live. The Expunge Weekly Pinnacle missions begin on May 25, with newer missions set to be added each week after that up to June 29.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
