While Bungie has previously confirmed a number of new, next-generation features coming to Destiny 2 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the studio apparently didn’t announce everything. In fact, during the Xbox Series X Global Launch Livestream, Phil Spencer and Bungie CEO Pete Parsons get together to play a bit of Beyond Light. During the gaming session, Spencer confirmed that the experience was locked in at 60 frames per second on the Xbox Series X.

However, the two hinted at another announcement, each one egging on the other to reveal the fun fact. In the end, Parsons officially announced that the PvP Crucible mode would be running at 120 frames per second on next-gen. Considering this was an Xbox oriented stream, Parsons didn’t specifically mention the PS5, though it’s highly unlikely that this setting wouldn’t also be coming to Sony’s latest console as well.
While this surprising news will no doubt excite next-gen players when the experience becomes available on December 8, some fans in the comments have already begun to wonder how this will be balanced when faced against current-generation users who won’t get that frame rate boost. There’s also some confusion as to what the resolution will be running at as well, with some wondering if this will retain 4k or drop to 1080p to support the added frames.
It’s no doubt an exciting time to be a Destiny 2 player, as Bungie begins retooling the three year old game. While legacy content is being removed to make way for new stuff, Beyond Light brings with it a laundry list of changes and updates to the experience including a new transmog mechanic for armor as well as the first set of new Darkness subclasses. With two additional expansions already announced and releasing over the next couple of years, it appears that Bungie has a clear direction of where this popular franchise should be going.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is now available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The PS5 version will release on November 12.
